GROUNDWORK (2023-present) centers around the concept of remembrance and legacy. A rumination on the impact of that which came before us— analyzing how it shapes us; and how we, in turn, shape what comes after us. This notion is echoed by using foundational objects, like bricks and stones, as key visual elements of the work. Additionally, an emotional component is present in the work as well— one of masking, protection, and preservation. A desire to express and to emerge that can’t quite reach the surface; veiled in canvas and armored by layers of paint. Only through the wearing away of what makes us feel secure can truth of expression finally, eventually; become known.
